Waste Management Licence - Toner and Inkjet Cartridges

I.T.P., under current legislation does not require a Waste Management License for its cartridge recovery activities. Extracts from this decision follow below.

The Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994 under the Environmental Protection ACT 1990 allows for the exemption of business’s to have a Waste Management Licence for certain low risk waste activities.

The Environment Agency has considered that the “secure storage and manual sorting of waste toner (printer and ink) cartridges destined for recovery” is “an activity that is likely to present little or no risk to the environment or human health” and therefore a “low risk waste regulation activity”.

The Environment Agency has therefore ruled that “it is not in the public interest for you (I.T.P.) to obtain a Waste Management License. This may also serve as reassurance to any third party should they have query regarding the Duty of Care”

Waste Management Licence- Mobile Phones

I.T.P., under current legislation does not require a Waste Management License for its mobile phone recovery activities.

Mobile phones fall within the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive which legislates how the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment must now follow legislation as set out in the WEEE directive. I.T.P. have been granted an exemption under the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994 for the storage of WEEE.

The WEEE Directive affects any business that manufactures, brands, imports, sells, stores, treats or dismantles electrical or electronic products within the European Union (EU). The directive encourages and sets criteria for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of electrical and electronic waste.

This Directive aims to reduce the amount of WEEE being produced and encourages everyone to reuse, recycle and recover it.
